The energy consumption for space heating in the European Union represents about 52 % of the total energy consumption in service sector buildings – in the residential sector it is even more with 57 %. Without doubt most savings are achievable by insulation improvements of the building shell, but also replacing old boilers with new condensing boilers with an efficiency up to > 100% could reduce the energy bill for heating by about 5 %.
Beyond the pure economic advantages of modern heating technologies, especially the improved comfort and the security of energy supply are good reasons for respective investments. The range of measures covers the burner, the boiler, automatic control systems and efficient insulation of boiler and piping pumps, improvement in the hydraulic system and the radiator systems.
A first step for a potential GB Partner towards identifying applicable energy savings measures should be to establish a regular inventory of the heating system and warm water supply as well as the major operating parameters. Only an assessment of the systems and of your company's needs can determine which measures are both applicable and profitable. This could be done by a qualified energy consultant or by qualified in-house engineering staff. The assessment conclusions will identify the measures which are applicable to your heating system, and will include an estimation of the savings, the cost of the measures as well as the simple payback time. Assessment results are confidential in house data, not being reported to the Commission. After the assesment the Action Plan for enhanced efficiency of the heating systems has to be set up and presented to the National Contact Point in charge and to the EU Commission. After approval of all relevant action plans your organization will be recognized as a GB Partner.
